Ever since I started blogging about Finnish startups about a year ago, I’ve wanted to get my hands on a list of all of them. That obviously didn’t exist, so I had to compile it myself. I’ve compiled the list from various sources, mainly my own blog and Arctic Startup. At this point the list should contain most of the Finnish web startups, but I must have missed a few. Should you know a company missing from the list, please let me know in the comments.

The list of Finnish StartupsIt was quite hard to categorize all of the startups as many seem to fall into several categories. As you can see from the list, there are a lot of startups in the Social media, gaming and mobile categories. There is a nice variety in the startups and it’s great that they have managed to find some unique ideas.

Yeah, a list would be good. but should we build our own list or use Crunchbase or some other existing service?

By Timo Paloheimo on October 7th, 2008:

For my list of Finnish startups I first considered using CrunchBase or Tradevibes, but there are only about a dozen Finnish companies in each site. I suspect that this would be the same for most European startups.

If you can get all the European startups to join Crunchbase then that would be better of course.

Soon Trip Essentials will be part of the ’social’ Travel start-up list. We will be presenting the private BETA during LeWeb08 in Paris. TripEss.com is coming soon.

Great list. Seems like a lot is happening in Finland. It would also be cool if The Next Web could give it a grade based on the possibility of success.
The grade should be adjustable over time though…

    Oo… Patrick, that’d be a dangerous game to play! Not that I wouldn’t vote myself… ;-)

You’ll be happy to know that ArcticStartup is already hard at work on a Nordic and Baltic wide ‘CrunchBase’ and it should come out very soon.

We’ve been trying to get an understanding of all the startups across the Baltic and Nordic countries ourselves and felt that a common directory could help out everybody.

Will let you guys know as soon as we get it out.

    Great job Ville!

Why do you guys limit yourselfs to Northern-Europe ?

    Nicolas,

    Good question!

We don’t necessarily want to limit it to Northern-Europe, but will focus our resources to those startups because we follow Northern-European startups at ArcticStartup itself. Thus, by focusing on Northern Europe in everything we do we aim to provide more value for our readers.

At the end of the day the choice goes back to why we started blogging in the first place:

“We at ArcticStartup aim to encourage entrepreneurship and to help create a radically optimistic entrepreneurial culture here in the Nordics and Baltics by writing about the startups, the stories behind them and the events that influence them.”

I’m not sure about the definition of a startup but I think you could list Snoobi under the category of business tools.

http://www.fraced.com – a really “green” startup released in July… the substance is not there yet and we try to get initial user base… Stay tuned!

Excellent list, Timo. Great work! I guess you might find some additional companies from this list of Finnish gaming companies: http://asmunder.net/peliyhtiot/ — I hope it helps to develop your list further.

    Hi,

you’ll find quite good coverage of Finnish high-tech start-ups from our web site. Web 2.0 companies are not a separate category, but would mainly be listed under category ICT – Software. Bear with me – the engine is awful – but we are working on a tenfold improvement over this listing.

    http://www.technopolisventures.fi/index.php?568

N.B. Pre-incubation cases and graduated clients are not listed here, so there’s several interesting Web2.0 companies that will later appear on the public radar or have already gone though our development programs.
