Amsterdam based Tipspot is a new social city guide, started by Frank Elbert. Yes we know, probably a thousand entrepreneurs have tried to build a social city guide and success stories are scarce (at least in Europe). One of the biggest problems is that you have to have presence in every city and partnerships with content providers.
Tipspot is gonna give it a new try, this time it might actually work. They start off in 4 cities in the Netherlands (Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam and The Hague) and have made deals with several city guides to get data about what is going on in each of those cities. The users decide what is cool and trendy and in the near future they can add new data (duh) to the engine. The service is available in Dutch and English and is targetted at young and trendy people (29 is still considered young, lucky me) who live in the Netherlands (or visit a conference in one of those cities)
The design and UI is really nice, they have thought well about the registration process and within a minute you’ll get tips about the stuff that might be cool for you tonight, next weekend etc. By saying what you like, the service learns something about your taste and will alter its recommendations especially for you. So you end up with a personalized city guide that gets fed by standard data from several city (night) guides, by people you like or think are trendy and by your friends.

Apart from a web based service, their focus seems to go to your mobile phone. In collaboration with the mobile developers of The Saints, they’ve build a neat mobile java app which is compatible with almost all phones (Frank told me that they are working on an iPhone app and Blackberry support). This mobile app is one of the finalists in the Vodafone Mobile Clicks contest. The winner will be announced next week during Picnic and will receive €100k!

Next week Tipspot will launch officially, but you can create your personal guide already via The Next Web (leave a comment and I’ll invite you). We have 75 invites.
