Internet (or "the cloud" as we currently seem to call it) is suprisingly resistant against arbitrairy laws. Laws only make sense if you are able to enforce them.

Just imagine being an internet company like Facebook and having to deal with all sorts of crazy protectionist laws from all the countries of the world. Not to mention the other side of the equation: the tax money that has to be spent by countries chasing the internet companies that violate their laws.

Most people are not aware and certainly not used to having so much personal responsibility and no 'laws' to fall back on, but, here we are. Welcome to "the cloud" ;)

I agree with your last statement. Though that is currently not the case. Therefore the warnings outed are a result of our hosted data currently not being protected by law.

The data on your PC are quite well protected once you turn it off. Assuming they won't come to your house to confiscate it.
The "cloud" your data resides in never gets turned off.

My private photos at Flickr should never be exposed to another persons eyes without my permission. Until I am assured that law (and obedience of those laws by authorities) will prevent that from happening, I will keep my most sensitive photos in my home.

You state: "You shouldn’t have to hide who you are and what you do"

In what sense? I might take pictures or write poems intended never to be shared. Is that hiding what I do?
