I just built a green home improvement search engine that relies on both crowd knowledge and the knowledge of an expert. The expert chooses which topics to highlight as well as which site to promote/demote, and then the crowd comes in and votes results up and down. Without the involvement of the expert, the community has little structure for them to make decisions.

I think Wales meant quality search isn't a product, not that anyone doing search these days now has quality search. That you can't fuel a successful enterprise with just a wrinkle on general search alone. Specialized search or the micro-directories you're talking about I doubt are really comparable as enterprises with Google or even the early days of Yahoo! because they were attempting to be comprehensive for the entire medium in a way a niche search just isn't, instead trying to establish an editorial perspective, not an encyclopedic directory service like in the early days.

[...] Scott also asked Kevin some questions about the future of Digg. Kevin: “We have to fix the Upcoming section because it’s broken. Nobody can follow the 50,000 new stories users submit per day”. So how will Rose and his team do this? Well, there gonna follow the 3.0 trend by letting in the experts. [...]
